Speaking to the Observer about the contest at its head office in Bausher yesterday, MEDC’s Corporate Communications Specialist, Zahran bin Zaher al Ruqeishi noted that the company’s call centre has received thousands of phone calls from customers enquiring about how they can participate in the scheme. He said, this year they have taken a unique step by offering customers cash rewards for finding ways of making drastic reductions in their electrical consumption.
He added, they must be able to demonstrate that they have registered the highest deduction in electricity consumption compared with their previous year’s consumption for the same summer period.
MEDC’s summer campaign began in the beginning of June and will conclude at the end of August. During this time MEDC is distributing flyers containing tips and hints on how customers can make reductions.
As explained by Al Ruqeishi, by simply following these tips, customers will be able to register considerable savings. For example,Compact fluorescent light bulbs convert a led tube considerably higher percentage of their energy into light, which is why they are significantly more energy efficient than traditional filament bulbs. he continued, most of the ACs in Oman are set at the manufacturers’ default temperature of 16-degrees centigrade.
If the customer maintains this temperature level, the AC will keep functioning at optimum level without it switching to an alternative cycle. Alternatively, he continued, if you put the setting up to 23-degrees centigrade you save electricity and you prolong the operational life of the set.Under efforts of led spotlight boosting the viability of LED luminaires, many companies are expanding high-power selections. Further, he added, during the summer season it is not necessary to switch on water heaters, as the water temperature is already naturally warmed up, and instead of using the household tumble drier — which, after the AC, is another high consumer of electricity – it is just as practical to let the clothes dry naturally on clothes lines, as long as it does not cause adverse alteration to the garments.
Other practical measures that can be taken are to ensure children switch off all electrical units once they leave their room. TVs and other electricity consuming appliances are completely switched off when not in use and outside lighting is set on timers rather being left on from dusk to dawn.
