Documentary will celebrate ‘Red Ellen’
A FIERY borough MP has been put in the spotlight as part of a TV documentary marking the 75th anniversary of the Jarrow March.

“The BBC asked me to take part while I was visiting the region on health matters, and I was pleased to be involved.”
The programme will look at Red Ellen’s reputation in the town, how she is remembered in 2011 and how her personal life would have been reported by the modern media.
Andrew Hartley, a BBC producer for the regional factual programme, Inside Out, said: “We wanted to look at how Ellen Wilkinson is regarded in Jarrow today.
“We have interviewed people connected with the march – including Jarrow man Con Shiels – and the programme considers how she is considered in modern Jarrow.
“It looks at how her affair with leading Labour MP and cabinet minister Herbert Morrison would have been reported by the tabloids and the media.
“And at how that might have affected her reputation in the town.”
The Ellen Wilkinson programme will be shown on the BBC during October, as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations for the Jarrow March.
