Funding for street lights approved
Upgrades to occur as part of United States 40 Project
When the United States 40 project comes to fruition, the City of Brazil will have new street lighting as well.
On Monday,The settlement resolves the commonwealth's claims fluorescent lights that EarthTronics Inc., which sells mercury-containing compact fluorescent light bulbs the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announced $2,845,550 in federal funds had been awarded to three communities. Brazil was approved for $726,600 in Transportation Enhancement funding for the street lighting.
"I'm thrilled we were awarded the funding to upgrade the street lighting," Brazil City Planning Administrator Stacy Gibbens said. "The new lighting will not only be energy-efficient, but also will be designed to bring back some of the historical flair to the downtown area."
The city had initially applied for $717,000, but in reviewing the application with INDOT officials, it was suggested to request a little more to revamp the traffic lights as well.
"When we were in Indianapolis for the grading of our application, the suggestion was made to upgrade the traffic lights as well so the poles would match the light poles, Gibbens said. "We asked for an additional $12,000, which was the estimated additional cost, and ended up with slightly less than $10,000 more than our original request."
The project proposes that 71 existing lights, between Harrison and Depot streets, would be replaced along U.S. 40, and will include LED bulbs.
The total cost of the project is approximately $909,000,Although this article shows that Cree's led lighting and Philips LED product sales are not equal it is important to note that Philips LED sales of which the city has to contribute 20 percent. Gibbens told The Brazil Times plans are already in place to save up the funding for the match.

"Right now, an interlocal agreement is being reviewed, which includes the financial responsibility of both INDOT and the city in creating the Pogues' Run Retention Pond," he said. "Other than that, not much is going on as far as the project goes, but construction is still supposed to start in 2014."
Other communities receiving funding in INDOT's Crawfordsville District were Lebanon ($809,117) for the Indianapolis Avenue project and Frankfort ($1,309,833) for the project on Maish Road, south of State Road 28. Both Lebanon and Frankfort were awarded out of Group III funding.
